Athletes Demand Enhanced Representation in Proposed Sports Regulatory Board

Elite athletes across the country voiced their concerns regarding the draft National Sports Governance Bill during a consultation with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday. Key issues highlighted included the need for greater athlete representation, improved coordination between government and private stakeholders, and the mandate for the proposed Sports Regulatory Board.

The establishment of the Sports Regulatory Board is a pivotal aspect of the draft bill, which aims to oversee the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and National Sports Federations by granting, renewing, and suspending affiliations. However, this board’s overriding powers have raised eyebrows, particularly from IOA President P.T. Usha, who warned that its constitution could be perceived as government interference by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), potentially risking India’s suspension from international competitions.

Athletes emphasized that their input is essential in shaping the board to ensure it effectively addresses their needs and concerns. The proposed regulatory framework is seen as an opportunity to enhance governance in Indian sports, but stakeholders are urging caution to avoid actions that might undermine the autonomy of sports organizations.

As discussions continue, the athletes’ call for a balanced approach highlights the ongoing dialogue between sports authorities and athletes, aimed at creating a more equitable and effective sports governance structure in India.
