Anurag Basu: Films Mirror Life Phases

Anurag Basu Says Films Reflect Life’s Phases, Women Key Inspiration

Celebrated filmmaker Anurag Basu believes that the journey of a filmmaker is intricately tied to their personal evolution, with cinema often acting as a mirror to life’s phases. In a recent interview, Basu reflected on how his own growth—both professionally and personally—has shaped the stories he tells on screen.

“Movies reflect the phase you are going through in your life,” Basu said, speaking to PTI. “Initially, my films were a little erotic when I was young. After that, I grew older, had a family, matured, and then began to understand the depth of relationships in a much better way. Those depths then began to be reflected in films.”

Basu, whose filmography spans more than two decades, is known for his dynamic storytelling across genres. From the early erotic thriller Murder and the intense Gangster to the heartwarming Barfi! and the stylized drama Kites, his work has consistently shown emotional nuance and narrative experimentation. He has also made a mark with ensemble films like Life in a… Metro and Ludo, which capture the complexity of modern relationships and urban life.

The director credits women as a major source of inspiration in his life and work. “Women have played a huge role in shaping my understanding of emotions and storytelling,” he said, without naming specific influences. His films often feature strong female characters, navigating emotional landscapes with grace and resilience.

Basu is currently working on Metro… In Dino, a spiritual successor to his 2007 hit Life in a… Metro. The film is expected to carry forward his signature storytelling style—interweaving multiple narratives that explore love, loneliness, and connection in a bustling cityscape.

As Basu’s cinematic journey continues, it remains deeply rooted in personal transformation, emotional exploration, and a keen understanding of human relationships—a testament to the evolving lens through which he views the world.
