Annual Monsoon Bird Census Begins in Odisha’s Bhitarkanika National Park

The much-anticipated annual census of monsoon birds has commenced at Bhitarkanika National Park, Odisha, with authorities initiating the headcount on Monday. The census aims to document the numerous avian species that flock to the park’s wetland sites for nesting during the monsoon season.

A team of four groups, consisting of expert ornithologists and dedicated wildlife personnel from the park, have been deployed to carry out this significant task. The census, a key activity for the park, provides vital data on the bird population and helps in monitoring the health of the ecosystem.

According to park officials, the arrival of the monsoon birds was slightly delayed this year due to uneven rainfall patterns. However, despite the delay, an impressive number of birds have already been observed congregating along the park’s extensive mangrove covers. These mangroves, known for their lush greenery and rich biodiversity, offer a perfect sanctuary for the birds to nest and raise their young during the monsoon season.

The census is expected to continue over the next few days, and the final results will provide insights into the species diversity and population trends of the avian visitors. Bhitarkanika National Park, recognized for its unique wetland ecosystems, is home to a variety of wildlife, including some rare and endangered bird species.

This annual census not only aids in conservation efforts but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of the park’s rich natural heritage. The data collected will be instrumental in shaping future conservation strategies and ensuring that Bhitarkanika continues to be a thriving habitat for monsoon birds.
