AIIMS Bhubaneswar Declared CoE for Sickle-Cell

AIIMS Bhubaneswar to Become Centre of Excellence for Sickle Cell Disease: Jual Oram
AIIMS Bhubaneswar is set to be recognised as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for the management and research of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), announced Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram during the observance of World Sickle Cell Awareness Day at the institute.
Highlighting the pivotal role played by AIIMS Bhubaneswar in delivering specialised care to SCD patients across Odisha and neighbouring states, Oram said the new status will significantly enhance the institute’s research capabilities and treatment infrastructure. “This Centre of Excellence will pave the way for advanced care, cutting-edge research, and improved patient outcomes,” he said.
He further noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India has committed to eradicating Sickle Cell Anaemia by 2047. As part of this national mission, 5.79 crore people have been screened so far, with 5.55 crore testing negative, 16.38 lakh identified as carriers, and 2.10 lakh diagnosed with the disease.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar currently provides comprehensive care to over 700 registered SCD patients, with a majority—more than 500—belonging to the 0–19 age group. Services offered include diagnostic testing, regular treatment, and carrier screening of extended families, said AIIMS Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas.
The institute also offers prenatal diagnostic services for early detection of hereditary conditions like Down syndrome, thalassemia, neural tube defects, and Sickle Cell Anaemia during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. Dr. Biswas explained that if both parents are carriers, there is a 25% risk of the child being affected.
During his visit, Oram interacted with SCD patients and their families, acknowledging the empathetic and holistic care provided by AIIMS Bhubaneswar, especially for tribal and underserved populations. He praised the institute’s continued efforts in screening, awareness, and treatment—calling it a model of inclusive healthcare in eastern India.
