Shubman Gill Named India’s New Test Captain as Kohli, Rohit, Ashwin Bow Out

Marking a historic shift in Indian cricket, 25-year-old Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new Test captain for the upcoming five-match series in England, ushering in a new era following the retirements of senior legends Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

The announcement came during a press conference on Saturday, where Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar detailed the reasoning behind the bold decision and outlined the broader vision for Indian cricket’s transition into a new generation.

“You don’t appoint captains for just one or two tours — it’s an investment,” said Agarkar. “Shubman has shown tremendous maturity and potential over the past year. Leading the team in England will be a test by fire, but we trust in his abilities.”

Gill, who becomes one of the youngest Test captains in Indian history, will now spearhead a team entering uncharted territory without the backbone of its golden generation. Kohli, who played 123 Tests and scored 30 centuries, and Ashwin, India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, had made their retirement intentions clear earlier this year. Rohit Sharma communicated his decision to step away from the longest format in April.

“It’s never easy to see legends move on,” Agarkar said, reflecting on the massive void left behind. “They’ve shaped Indian cricket for more than a decade. Rohit felt he could no longer maintain the standard he set for himself, and we respect that.”

Adding to the transition challenges, pacer Mohammad Shami has been ruled out of the England series due to an injury setback. Agarkar confirmed that Shami’s recent MRI showed he wasn’t fit for selection.

Jasprit Bumrah, though not considered for captaincy, will remain a key figure. “We don’t expect Bumrah to play all five Tests,” Agarkar noted. “The medical team will monitor him closely, and we’re hopeful of his participation in at least three or four matches.”

The squad’s composition also raised eyebrows, particularly with the exclusion of in-form batter Sarfaraz Khan. “Performance matters, but continuity can’t be guaranteed in every case,” Agarkar explained. “That’s the reality of international cricket.”

Meanwhile, Karun Nair earned a recall, thanks to his strong domestic performance and experience in English conditions. “With Virat unavailable and a relatively young group, we believe Karun’s presence will bring balance and depth,” Agarkar said.

With KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant providing some experience, and a fresh leadership core forming around Gill, the five-Test series in England is seen as a major litmus test for the future of Indian cricket.

“This is a new cycle, a time to build something special,” Agarkar concluded. “The past generation has set the bar high. Now it’s time for the next one to rise and create its own legacy.”
