Murmu urges bigger role for women farmers

Prez Murmu calls for greater role for women in agri-food policy

Droupadi Murmu on Thursday stressed that women engaged in agriculture and agri-food sectors should be given a greater role in policy formulation, decision-making and leadership positions to strengthen the sector and promote inclusive growth.

Addressing the three-day Global Conference on Women in Agri-Food Systems in New Delhi, the President called for collective efforts to bridge gender gaps across the agri-food value chain and ensure that women farmers and professionals receive due recognition and opportunities.

Murmu highlighted that women make significant contributions to agriculture, food production and rural livelihoods, yet their role often remains under-represented in leadership and policy-making platforms. She said empowering women in these areas would not only strengthen agricultural systems but also improve food security and rural development.

Emphasising India’s commitment to women-led development, the President said it was essential to create an enabling environment where women could actively participate in shaping agricultural policies and decision-making processes.

Murmu also suggested that success stories and case studies of women working in agriculture should be widely documented and shared to inspire others and raise awareness about their vital role in the sector.

The President noted that greater participation of women across the agri-food ecosystem would help build resilient and sustainable agricultural systems while promoting gender equality in rural economies.
