Anil Sharma regrets late honour

Anil Sharma says Padma Vibhushan for Dharmendra came too late

Filmmaker Anil Sharma on Monday congratulated late Bollywood legend Dharmendra on being posthumously conferred the Padma Vibhushan, while expressing regret that the honour did not come earlier when the actor could have received it in person.

The Gadar director shared a note on his X handle, accompanied by a photograph of Dharmendra, paying tribute to the veteran star and his enduring legacy in Indian cinema.

“Heartfelt congratulations to every admirer of @aapkadharam ji on his #PadmaVibhushan. One only wishes this honour had come earlier, when he could have accepted it himself… the joy would have been immeasurable. Yet the truth remains… some legacies rise above awards,” Anil wrote.

Reflecting on the actor’s stature beyond formal recognitions, Sharma said the affection Dharmendra earned from audiences over generations mattered more than any title or medal.

“The love, respect, and admiration Dharam ji received from generations is far greater than any title, medal or any award,” he added.

Dharmendra, one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic stars, left an indelible mark with a career spanning over five decades and memorable performances across genres. The Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, has been widely seen as a tribute to his lifelong contribution to Indian cinema.

Several members of the film fraternity and fans have taken to social media to remember the actor and celebrate the recognition of his legacy.
