Kendrapara Crocodile Population Reaches 1,858

Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, a designated Ramsar wetland site, is home to 1,858 estuarine crocodiles, according to the latest census conducted by the state Forest Department.
The 2026 survey recorded an increase of 32 crocodiles compared to last year’s total of 1,826, reflecting steady growth in the population of these apex reptiles.
“Of the total 1,858 crocodiles, 353 are eight feet or longer,” said P K Jha, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden. He added that the increase highlights ongoing conservation efforts and the thriving habitat of Bhitarkanika, which is crucial for the survival of estuarine crocodiles.
Bhitarkanika National Park, renowned for its mangrove forests and rich biodiversity, remains one of the key sites for estuarine crocodile conservation in India. Officials emphasized the importance of continued monitoring and protection measures to maintain the population and safeguard the ecosystem.
The census serves as an important tool for planning conservation strategies and ensuring the park’s wildlife thrives amid increasing human activities in surrounding areas.
