Anu Garg becomes Odisha’s first woman chief secretary

Senior IAS officer Anu Garg on Wednesday evening assumed charge as the chief secretary of Odisha, becoming the first woman to hold the top bureaucratic post in the state.

Garg took over from outgoing chief secretary Manoj Ahuja, who retired from service on Wednesday. Her appointment marks a significant milestone in Odisha’s administrative history.

Prior to this role, Garg had created another first by becoming the state’s first woman Development Commissioner, a position she assumed in March 2023. During her tenure, she played a key role in overseeing development planning and implementation across departments.

Congratulating her on the appointment, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi described it as a historic moment and said it reflected the state government’s commitment to excellence in governance and the empowerment of women.

Garg is expected to lead the state administration at a crucial time, with a focus on development, efficient service delivery and coordinated policy implementation.
