Vedanta Lanjigarh Refinery Scales 5 MTPA

Vedanta Aluminium Expands Lanjigarh Refinery to 5 MTPA, Strengthening India’s Aluminium Leadership
Bhubaneswar, Dec 17 In a major boost to India’s aluminium production capabilities, Vedanta Aluminium has successfully scaled up its Lanjigarh refinery to a capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). With this expansion, the facility has become the world’s second-largest alumina refinery outside China, reinforcing India’s position as a global aluminium hub.
The Lanjigarh refinery now contributes 38 percent of India’s total alumina output, making it the country’s largest single-location alumina refinery. Overall, India’s alumina refining capacity has increased to nearly 13 MTPA, positioning the nation as the third-largest alumina producer globally.
The expansion comes amid growing domestic demand for aluminium across sectors such as infrastructure, automotive, electric vehicles, renewable energy, construction, railways, and aerospace. In November, the refinery recorded its highest-ever monthly alumina production of 254 kilotonnes (KT), marking an 8 percent month-on-month increase and a 68 percent year-on-year growth.
The refinery’s record output was achieved through operational excellence, handling over 700 rakes in a single month, attaining the lowest specific power consumption in 20 months, and reducing conversion costs to an 18-month low through process optimization and enhanced resource efficiency.
Commenting on the milestone, Vedanta Aluminium CEO Rajiv Kumar said, “Scaling up Lanjigarh operations to 5 MTPA represents both a capacity milestone and a step toward building a resilient, world-class aluminium value chain. Our ramp-up, evidenced by record monthly outputs, reflects our commitment to responsible resource development, innovation, and long-term value creation for the nation.”
