CM Majhi Announces Expansion of Berhampur into Greater Berhampur City

Bhubaneswar, Dec 17 : Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday announced plans to expand Berhampur city, the lifeline of south Odisha, into a modern urban hub named Greater Berhampur City.

Speaking at the 42nd Annual Function of Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir at Neelakantha Nagar, Berhampur, the Chief Minister directed the district administration to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the city’s expansion, underlining that the development of Berhampur and the wider Ganjam district is pivotal for Odisha’s overall growth.

As part of the urban development initiative, ten major roads will be constructed across Berhampur and surrounding areas to improve connectivity, ease traffic congestion, and enhance living standards. A total of Rs. 52.17 crore has been earmarked for these projects.

To ensure systematic provision of essential services, a Town Planning (TP) Scheme will be implemented in the city. Two TP Schemes have already been prepared, expected to improve urban infrastructure in Berhampur’s outskirts and benefit local landowners.

Recognizing the city’s culinary reputation, the Chief Minister announced plans to develop Food Streets at various locations within the Berhampur Municipal Corporation area.

Among major infrastructure projects, a six-lane road connecting Berhampur to Jeypore is under construction at an estimated cost of Rs. 6,000 crore, aimed at accelerating regional connectivity and development.

Highlighting the importance of education, Majhi said the Godabarish Mishra Model Primary School Scheme has been launched to provide quality primary education, with one school planned in each panchayat. The first phase has already received approval for 2,200 schools.

Further, the Chief Minister announced that the Board of Secondary Education and the Council of Higher Secondary Education will be merged into a single board aligned with CBSE and ICSE standards, aiming to raise educational quality. Efforts are also underway to enhance teacher recruitment and educational infrastructure, with 45,000 teaching posts to be created over the next three years to address staff shortages.

With these initiatives, Greater Berhampur City is set to become a modern, well-planned urban centre, boosting infrastructure, connectivity, education, and lifestyle in south Odisha.
