Anuparna Roy film closes Sydney festival

Anuparna Roy’s ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’ to Close Indian Film Festival of Sydney

The 11th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Sydney (IFFS) will conclude with the screening of “Songs of Forgotten Trees,” the critically acclaimed film by award-winning filmmaker Anuparna Roy, organisers announced on Friday.

The film recently brought Roy international acclaim by winning the Orizzonti Award for Best Director at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival. Its Australian premiere will mark the closing night of the Sydney festival on October 12.

Described as a lyrical and meditative exploration of memory, resilience, and the sacred connection between humans and nature, Songs of Forgotten Trees has been praised for its poetic visuals and emotional depth.

Festival organisers said the decision to close the event with Roy’s Venice-winning feature highlights the growing global recognition of Indian independent cinema and its evolving storytelling voices.

With Roy’s film rounding off the festival, IFFS 2025 promises to celebrate the diversity and creativity of Indian filmmakers reaching audiences across the world.
