Odisha Farmers Export Green Papaya, Colocasia to Ireland

Bhubaneswar : Odisha has achieved another milestone in its agriculture sector with the successful export of 320 kg of green papaya and 100 kg of colocasia from Dhenkanal to Ireland via Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

The initiative was led by the Directorate of Horticulture, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, with support from the Gates Foundation and coordination by Palladium. The consignment was spearheaded by Dhenkanal-based Saptasajya Agro Producer Company, a farmers’ collective that has been working to secure fair prices for farmers and expand the global reach of Odisha’s agricultural produce.

For the first time, colocasia joined papaya in the export consignment, marking a broader footprint of the state’s horticultural products in international markets. Officials noted that the move not only reflects Odisha’s growing agricultural strength but also provides a global platform for local farmers.

Since 2024, more than 140 metric tons of fresh fruits and vegetables from Odisha have been exported to 10 international destinations under Palladium’s guidance and the Agriculture Department’s leadership. Farmers involved in these exports have earned between 40% and 62% higher returns for their produce, strengthening rural livelihoods and promoting self-reliance.

Officials said such initiatives will help boost Odisha’s position in international agricultural trade while empowering smallholder farmers. “This is not just about exports; it’s about creating opportunities for Odisha’s farmers and showcasing their produce to the world,” an official remarked.
