Mahesh Bhatt Reflects on Early Failures

Mahesh Bhatt Reflects on Early Career Failures Before Arth
Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has opened up about his early struggles in the film industry, describing himself as a “stumbling-fumbling” filmmaker whose first few projects failed to make a mark at the box office.
Bhatt, who began his career as an assistant director to the late Raj Khosla, made his directorial debut in 1974 with Manzilein Aur Bhi Hain, starring Kabir Bedi and Prema Narayan. However, the film failed commercially. He went on to direct Vishwasghaat, Naya Daur, and Lahu Ke Do Rang, none of which resonated strongly with audiences.
It was only later, with semi-autobiographical dramas like Arth, Janam, and Zakhm, that Bhatt found his footing and critical acclaim. These films established him as a filmmaker capable of blending personal storytelling with socially relevant themes.
Reflecting on his journey, Bhatt emphasized that his early setbacks shaped his understanding of filmmaking and storytelling, ultimately paving the way for his later successes.
