Nepal Army Takes Command Amid Escalating Gen Z Protests

Kathmandu, Sep 9: The Nepali Army (NA) announced on Tuesday evening that it will assume direct control of security operations in Nepal starting 10 PM, following escalating Gen Z protests that have turned violent across Kathmandu and other cities.

The protests, initially peaceful demonstrations against corruption and a government ban on social media platforms, escalated into widespread clashes, with protesters vandalizing and setting fire to several key government buildings and the homes of top leaders. At least 19 youths were killed in police firing on Monday, further fueling outrage. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned earlier on Tuesday amid the unrest.

Despite curfews and heightened police presence, protesters defied restrictions, carrying out incidents of arson, vandalism, and looting. Government offices affected include the Supreme Court, Special Court, Kathmandu District Courts, the Office of the Auditor General, the President’s Office at Sheetal Niwas, Singha Durbar, the Federal Parliament, land revenue offices, and the residences of top political leaders.

In a statement, the Nepali Army said, “Some groups are taking undue advantage of the difficult situation and causing severe damage to ordinary citizens and public property.” It warned that all security mechanisms, including the army, would be mobilized to contain the violence if destructive activities continue. The NA also appealed to citizens to avoid supporting or engaging in destructive acts.

Chief of Army Staff, General Ashok Raj Sigdel, urged protest groups to suspend their programs and engage in dialogue to find peaceful solutions. In a late-evening video message, he called on all citizens to cooperate in maintaining peace, security, and national unity, emphasizing the importance of protecting national heritage, diplomatic missions, and citizens’ property.

The decision marks the first time the Nepali Army has stepped in to directly oversee security operations during the ongoing youth-led protests. Analysts say it reflects growing concern that the existing police measures may be insufficient to restore order.

The situation remains tense as authorities work to prevent further damage to life and property, while calls for dialogue continue in hopes of resolving the crisis peacefully.
