Modi welcomes Trump’s optimism on trade

PM Modi Expresses Optimism on Trade Talks, Says He Looks Forward to Speaking with Trump

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s positive remarks on the ongoing trade talks between India and the United States, expressing confidence that the negotiations will unlock the “limitless potential” of the partnership.

“India and the US are close friends and natural partners. Both countries are working to conclude the trade discussions at the earliest,” Modi said in a post on X. He added, “I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people.”

The remarks came hours after Trump said he was confident that there would be “no difficulty” in reaching a successful conclusion to the discussions, while describing Modi as his “very good friend.” He indicated that the two leaders are likely to speak in the coming weeks.

Bilateral ties between the two countries have faced strain in recent months, particularly after Washington imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, prompting sharp reactions in New Delhi. However, Trump’s conciliatory comments and Modi’s positive response signal a thaw in relations.

This is the second instance in recent weeks where the US President has spoken highly of ties with India, pairing his praise for the country with personal appreciation for Modi’s leadership.
