NHRC Seeks Report from Odisha DGP on Alleged Assault of TV Journalist in Bolangir
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from the Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) regarding the alleged physical assault of a television journalist in Bolangir district.
The Commission took suo motu cognisance of media reports detailing the May 25 incident, in which the journalist was reportedly attacked by unidentified miscreants. The NHRC has asked the DGP to submit a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
According to initial reports, the journalist had gone to a construction site in a village within Bolangir district to investigate and report on alleged corruption in an ongoing construction project. While covering the story, he was allegedly assaulted by a group of miscreants.
Officials said the NHRC’s intervention comes in light of growing concerns over the safety of journalists and the need to protect press freedom. The Commission has stressed the importance of ensuring that media personnel can perform their duties without fear of violence or intimidation.
The incident has sparked outrage among journalist associations and civil society groups, who are demanding a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible. Further developments are expected as the inquiry progresses.
