Depression Likely, Heavy Rainfall in Odisha

Depression Likely Over Bay of Bengal; CEC Predicts Heavy Rainfall Across Odisha

Bhubaneswar, May 27 : The Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha as a low-pressure area (LOPAR) formed over the north-west Bay of Bengal on Tuesday is expected to intensify into a depression by Thursday.

In its latest weather bulletin, the CEC stated that the system is likely to move in a north-easterly direction along the Odisha coast, bringing widespread rainfall across the state. Coastal and northern districts are expected to experience particularly intense precipitation between May 28 and May 30.

Districts likely to be affected by heavy to very heavy rainfall include Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Nayagarh, and Ganjam.

The CEC also warned of significant rainfall in the catchment areas of the Baitarani, Subarnarekha, and Budhabalang rivers, raising concerns over potential flooding in vulnerable regions.

Meteorologists suggest that this system could aid the early onset of the southwest monsoon in Odisha, likely by Thursday. However, a temporary dry spell accompanied by a rise in temperature is expected between June 1 and 3, after which rainfall activity is likely to resume.

Authorities are closely monitoring the system, and the public, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas, has been advised to stay alert and follow updates from official weather sources.
