Meghalaya to Host 2027 National Games

Meghalaya to Solely Host 39th National Games in 2027: CM Conrad Sangma
Shillong, May 21 — Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday announced that the state will independently host the 39th National Games in 2027, dismissing any speculation about a joint hosting arrangement with other northeastern states.
“Meghalaya is the host state. There is no other state that is hosting the National Games,” Sangma stated firmly, clarifying recent reports that suggested otherwise. While the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Government of India have encouraged inclusivity, Sangma emphasized that Meghalaya will retain full control and leadership of the event.
“To promote inclusiveness, one or two disciplines may be given to different northeastern states. This is just to send a positive message of unity across the region,” he explained, adding that symbolic participation from neighboring states would not diminish Meghalaya’s primary hosting role.
State Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri had earlier mentioned that the Centre had proposed allowing other northeastern states to host at least one discipline. However, Sangma reiterated that the 2027 National Games will be a Meghalaya-led initiative, with the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the majority of sporting events, held within the state.
The Chief Minister also announced a visionary step toward environmental sustainability, declaring the Games would be a plastic-free event. “My target is that the National Games should be completely biodegradable,” Sangma said, underlining his government’s commitment to eco-friendly practices and long-term environmental impact.
Meghalaya will become the third northeastern state to host the prestigious event, following Manipur in 1999 and Assam in 2007. The announcement marks a significant milestone for the hill state, which is preparing to showcase its culture, hospitality, and sports infrastructure on a national stage.
