IIM Lucknow Study Links Birdwatching Sustainability

IIM Lucknow Study Highlights Birdwatching’s Role in Promoting Sustainable Tourism
A new research study from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow explores how birdwatching can influence tourists’ environmental attitudes and promote sustainable tourism practices. The study, co-authored by Associate Professor Anirban Chakraborty, has been published in the prestigious Tourism Recreation Research journal.
The research investigates whether birdwatching — a nature-based, low-impact recreational activity — can foster greater ecological awareness among tourists and encourage them to adopt environmentally responsible behavior during their travels.
According to the authors, birdwatching experiences help cultivate a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and conservation, making tourists more mindful of their ecological footprint.
“Birdwatching, by its very nature, involves patience, observation, and immersion in natural surroundings — all of which can enhance one’s environmental consciousness,” said Prof. Chakraborty.
The study further suggests that integrating birdwatching into ecotourism models could be a strategic move for sustainable destination management. It highlights how tourism stakeholders can design birding tours that educate participants while supporting local conservation efforts.
This research comes at a time when the tourism industry is increasingly seeking ways to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility. The findings offer practical insights for policymakers, tour operators, and conservation groups aiming to promote sustainable travel experiences.
The paper marks a significant contribution to the growing body of literature on nature-based tourism and its potential to drive positive behavioral change.
