Punjab Targets 5 Lakh Acres for DSR Technique to Boost Sustainable Agriculture
The Punjab government has set an ambitious target of bringing 5 lakh acres of land under the Direct Seeding of Rice (DSR) technique this kharif season, aiming to promote sustainable agriculture and conserve groundwater resources.
State Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian announced that farmers can begin paddy cultivation using the DSR technique from Thursday, marking a significant step towards reducing the state’s reliance on water-intensive traditional paddy sowing methods.
To encourage the adoption of DSR, the Punjab government is offering financial assistance of Rs 1,500 per acre to farmers who choose this innovative and environmentally friendly approach. The DSR technique is considered a more efficient way of sowing paddy, reducing water consumption and promoting better soil health.
Khuddian emphasized that the initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to sustainable farming practices and the conservation of vital natural resources, especially groundwater, which has been depleting at an alarming rate in many parts of Punjab.
The move is expected to benefit farmers by reducing the labor and water requirements associated with traditional paddy farming, ultimately contributing to more efficient and eco-friendly agriculture in the state.
