Odisha’s Rath Yatra, Bali Yatra Recognized

Odisha’s Rath Yatra, Bali Yatra Listed in National Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory

Odisha’s iconic Rath Yatra and Bali Yatra festivals have been included in the national inventory of intangible cultural heritage by the Sangeet Natak Akademi under the Ministry of Culture, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Monday.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s apex cultural body, recognizes and preserves significant traditions that contribute to the country’s diverse cultural fabric. Rath Yatra, the grand chariot festival of Lord Jagannath in Puri, and Bali Yatra, a historic festival commemorating Odisha’s ancient maritime legacy, are among the state’s most celebrated events with global recognition.

Expressing his delight, CM Majhi took to X (formerly Twitter) and stated, “Delighted that Rath Yatra & Bali Yatra, symbols of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage, have been listed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage by @sangeetnatak. This is a proud moment for every Odia, and we look forward to their well-deserved recognition on @UNESCO’s global stage.”

The inclusion of these festivals in the national inventory is expected to strengthen efforts toward securing UNESCO recognition, further promoting Odisha’s cultural traditions on an international platform.

Heritage experts and cultural enthusiasts welcomed the announcement, emphasizing that this recognition will help preserve and promote these age-old traditions for future generations.
