Union Health Ministry Releases National Guidelines on Medical Oxygen Management
Launches National Capacity Building Programme on Oxygen Management in Collaboration with AIIMS, New Delhi
In a significant move to strengthen India’s medical oxygen infrastructure, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) released the National Guidelines on Medical Oxygen Management at a workshop held at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. The event also marked the launch of the National Capacity Building Programme on Oxygen Management, an initiative aimed at enhancing the efficient utilization and maintenance of medical oxygen resources across healthcare facilities in the country.
Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava, while addressing the gathering, highlighted the importance of properly maintaining and utilizing medical oxygen infrastructure to ensure preparedness for any future health exigencies. She emphasized that learnings from India’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic have been instrumental in shaping these new guidelines and training programs.
Strengthening Medical Oxygen Infrastructure
The National Guidelines on Medical Oxygen Management serve as a comprehensive framework for the procurement, storage, and administration of medical oxygen. The guidelines aim to ensure uniform best practices across healthcare facilities, focusing on patient safety, emergency preparedness, and optimal oxygen usage. With the implementation of these guidelines, hospitals and healthcare centers will be better equipped to handle oxygen demands, particularly during public health emergencies.
Capacity Building Through Training Programme
As part of the initiative, the National Capacity Building Programme on Oxygen Management will be spearheaded by the Department of Hospital Administration at AIIMS, Delhi, in collaboration with the Disaster Management Cell of the MoHFW. The program is designed to train approximately 200 master trainers nationwide. These trainers will further impart knowledge and skills to hospital administrators and medical officers, ensuring the proper handling, storage, and utilization of medical oxygen.
Prof. M Srinivas, Director of AIIMS, underscored the institute’s commitment to leading the capacity-building program, stating that training and awareness at all levels of healthcare are crucial in minimizing oxygen wastage and improving clinical outcomes.
A Step Towards Healthcare Resilience
The newly launched guidelines and training program reaffirm the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare resilience and preparedness. By equipping medical personnel with the necessary knowledge and skills, the initiative aims to reduce wastage, optimize oxygen supply chains, and improve patient care outcomes.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Health, AIIMS, and medical professionals from across the country attended the workshop, marking a crucial step in India’s healthcare policy framework. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance the country’s ability to manage oxygen resources efficiently in both routine and emergency situations.
