A new study has found that generic drugs manufactured in India are associated with 54% more severe adverse effects, including hospitalization, disability, and death, compared to their US-made counterparts.

The research, which analyzed the safety of generic medications, revealed that the higher risk was primarily linked to “mature generic drugs”—medications that have been on the market for an extended period.

“Where generic drugs are manufactured can make a significant difference,” said John Gray, co-author of the study and professor of operations at The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business.

The study raises concerns over the quality control and regulatory differences in drug manufacturing across countries. However, further research may be needed to assess the exact causes behind the disparity.

The findings could impact global pharmaceutical policies, especially given that India is one of the largest producers of generic medicines, supplying drugs to various international markets, including the US.
