710 Dolphins Spotted in Odisha in Latest Census
The latest dolphin census conducted by Odisha’s forest, environment, and climate change department has recorded 710 dolphins in various waterbodies along the state’s coastline.
According to the 2024-25 census report, the dolphin population includes 498 Humpback dolphins, 188 Irrawaddy dolphins, 16 Bottlenose dolphins, and eight Spinner dolphins. These species were documented across six wildlife divisions of the state, highlighting Odisha’s rich marine biodiversity.
The highest concentration of dolphins was recorded in the Rajnagar Mangrove Wildlife Division in Kendrapara district, where 505 dolphins were spotted. The Chilika lagoon, another vital habitat, reported 174 dolphins.
Officials noted that the census findings reflect the effectiveness of conservation efforts and the state’s commitment to protecting marine life. The data will help strengthen conservation strategies, ensuring the long-term survival of these dolphin species in Odisha’s waters.
