17 Lifestyle Changes May Prevent Ageing Diseases

Study Identifies 17 Modifiable Risk Factors to Reduce Stroke, Dementia, and Late-Life Depression

A groundbreaking study has identified 17 modifiable risk factors that individuals can address to significantly lower the risk of developing stroke, dementia, and late-life depression — three major health conditions often associated with ageing.

The study, conducted by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, US, highlights high blood pressure and severe kidney disease as having the most significant impact on the development and burden of these conditions.

Other notable risk factors include fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, insufficient sleep, high stress levels, and even a lack of purpose in life. Researchers emphasized that by actively managing these factors, individuals may improve their chances of healthy ageing and reduce the onset of cognitive and neurological decline.

The findings offer a preventive roadmap for public health policies and personal health planning, stressing the importance of early and sustained lifestyle changes in mid to late life.

This study adds to the growing body of evidence supporting a holistic approach to ageing, with physical, emotional, and psychological well-being playing equally critical roles.
