Screen Time Disrupts Sleep, Boosts Depression

Excessive Screen Time Linked to Higher Depression Risk in Teen Girls, Study Finds

A new study has found that increased screen time can disrupt sleep patterns in teenagers, significantly raising the risk of depression, particularly in teenage girls.

Conducted by researchers at Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet, the study highlights a growing concern about the mental health impact of digital device use, especially in adolescents. While previous research has consistently shown a link between screen use and poor sleep quality, this new study explores how that disruption may, in turn, lead to depressive symptoms.

The findings suggest that sleep disturbances caused by excessive screen exposure — such as late-night scrolling or binge-watching — can negatively affect mental health, with teenage girls being especially vulnerable.

Researchers noted that while sleep problems and depression often occur together, it has been unclear which causes the other. This study adds weight to the idea that screen-induced sleep loss could be a significant contributing factor to depression in teens.

The study reinforces the need for healthy digital habits and screen-time limits, particularly during nighttime hours, to support better sleep and mental well-being among young people.
