WTO Chief Calls on India to Lead Global Trade Reform Efforts

World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Friday urged India to play a leading role in driving reforms within the multilateral trade body.

Speaking at an event in Visakhapatnam, she said India’s fast-growing economy and leadership in sectors such as technology position it strongly to guide the WTO’s modernisation efforts.

Okonjo-Iweala emphasised the need to identify areas within the organisation that are not functioning effectively and work collectively to address those gaps.

Highlighting India’s growing global influence, she noted that the country is well-placed to shape discussions aimed at strengthening the rules-based global trading system.
