Work on Additional Spillway at Odisha’s Hirakud Dam to Begin Soon

The construction of an additional spillway at Hirakud Dam is set to begin soon, aiming to enhance the reservoir’s flood water discharge capacity, officials said.

A nine-member team, including experts from the World Bank and the Central Water Commission (CWC), visited the proposed construction site at the dam’s left dyke on Saturday. The team also inspected the right dyke, power channel, and its gates while reviewing documents related to the additional spillway project.

Officials emphasized that the new spillway will strengthen flood management and ensure better safety for the dam, which plays a crucial role in irrigation, power generation, and water supply in Odisha.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the Hirakud Dam, one of India’s longest and most important dams, to address growing water management challenges.
