Renowned filmmaker Subhash Ghai has urged young filmmakers to stay true to their cultural roots rather than imitating Western cinema. He emphasized that a focus on indigenous storytelling could rejuvenate the Hindi film industry.

Speaking at a masterclass celebrating 45 years of his iconic film Karz, Ghai shared insights on the evolving nature of Indian cinema and the importance of authenticity in filmmaking.

“Connect to your own culture and make films about what you’ve grown up watching—the people, the world around you. Then you will be able to emote it in the right way,” Ghai stated.

The veteran director highlighted the success of Tamil and Telugu films, attributing their popularity to their deep cultural connection. According to him, these industries have managed to engage audiences effectively because their narratives remain rooted in local traditions and emotions.

Ghai also cautioned against the excessive reliance on technology in filmmaking. While acknowledging its benefits, he advised that storytelling should remain the heart of cinema.
