Shabana Azmi urges realistic female portrayals

Shabana Azmi Calls for Women on Screen Who Reflect Contemporary Realities

Veteran actor Shabana Azmi was honoured at the Jagran Film Festival during a special session titled “Let the Curtain Rise on the Women Who Never Needed One: Celebrating 50 Years of Shabana Azmi in Cinema.”

Speaking at the event on Thursday, the five-time National Award winner reflected on her cinematic journey and the evolution of female representation in Indian films. She said that the portrayal of women on screen must be more aligned with the present-day realities of society.

Azmi highlighted how patriarchy affects both men and women, stating that these complexities need to be depicted honestly in cinema. “We need to see women who are more reflective of the times,” she said, urging filmmakers to move away from stereotypical narratives.

The acclaimed actor also commented on the contrasting experiences of women in India, calling the country “strange” for its extreme disparities. “Some women have reached remarkable heights, whereas some are still being buried at birth,” she observed.

Azmi’s session explored her evolving understanding of womanhood, the power of storytelling, and the need for more nuanced roles that mirror the changing social landscape.
