PM Modi Commemorates Kargil Vijay Diwas and Inaugurates Shinkun La Tunnel Project
LADAKH: On the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Kargil War, attending the Shraddhanjali Samaroh and visiting significant memorial sites in Ladakh.
During the ceremony, PM Modi addressed the crowd, emphasizing the enduring significance of the Kargil victory and the sacrifices made by the armed forces. “Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds us that the sacrifices made for the nation are immortal,” Modi said. He also highlighted the unwavering dedication of the Indian military, noting that despite challenges, the nation’s commitment to its borders remains steadfast.
In addition to his homage, the Prime Minister witnessed the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project, which will feature a 4.1 km long Twin-Tube tunnel at an altitude of approximately 15,800 feet on the Nimu – Padum – Darcha Road. The tunnel, once completed, will be the highest in the world and is set to enhance all-weather connectivity to Leh, facilitating both military logistics and regional development.
PM Modi underscored the tunnel’s importance for Ladakh’s connectivity and development, stating that it would ease hardships caused by the region’s extreme weather and open new avenues for progress. He also praised the government’s efforts in boosting infrastructure and services in Ladakh, including a significant increase in the regional budget and improvements in various sectors like water, education, and telecommunications.
Addressing concerns about military modernization, Modi spoke about recent defense reforms, including the Agnipath Scheme, aimed at keeping the armed forces young and battle-ready. He highlighted the government’s focus on upgrading defense technologies and boosting indigenous defense production, while also refuting criticism and misinformation about the scheme.
The Prime Minister’s visit was attended by Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Brig (Dr) B D Sharma, Union Minister of State for Defence Shri Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan, and the Chiefs of Army Staff of the three armed forces.
The Shinkun La Tunnel Project, once completed, is expected to significantly bolster the strategic and economic capabilities of Ladakh, reinforcing its connectivity with the rest of the country throughout the year.
