Odisha Bans Petrol Sale in Plastic-Bottles

Odisha Bans Petrol Sale in Plastic Bottles Following Recent Burning Incidents
Bhubaneswar, July 21 : In the wake of two alarming cases involving the burning of a female student and a minor girl using inflammable fuel, the Odisha government has imposed a statewide ban on the sale of petrol and diesel in plastic bottles, Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra announced on Sunday.
The move comes after consultations with petroleum product distributors’ associations and aims to prevent misuse of highly inflammable substances stored in unsafe containers. Minister Patra emphasized that human safety is the top priority and strict directives have been issued to ensure compliance with existing safety regulations set by public sector oil companies.
“Petrol and diesel will no longer be sold in plastic containers. This decision has been taken after reviewing the tragic incidents and in consultation with petroleum dealers. We are prioritizing safety and order,” said Patra.
District Collectors across Odisha have been instructed to conduct surprise inspections to enforce the new directive and ensure adherence by all fuel retail outlets. The government warned that strict action will be taken against violators, including roadside vendors and small shop owners found illegally selling fuel.
The minister clarified, however, that existing rules allowing fuel supply to government departments, agricultural users, and registered institutions will continue to remain in force under regulated conditions.
This ban is seen as a preventive measure to curb illegal fuel sales and reduce the potential for such hazardous incidents in the future. Authorities have appealed to the public and fuel dealers to cooperate fully to ensure public safety.
