Odisha Announces Ex-Gratia for Panchayat Representatives

Odisha CM Announces Ex-Gratia for Panchayat Representatives in Case of Death or Disability
Bhubaneswar, July 17 : In a significant move to acknowledge the service and commitment of grassroots leaders, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday announced ex-gratia financial assistance for Panchayat representatives in the event of death or disability during their tenure.
The announcement covers all elected representatives under the Panchayati Raj system — from ward members to Zilla Parishad Presidents. The scheme aims to provide financial support to families of those who suffer unfortunate incidents while in service.
As per the new provisions:
- In the event of death from any cause during the term, the next of kin of the deceased representative will receive an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh.
- In case of complete disability, including the loss of both eyes, hands, or legs, the affected representative will also be entitled to Rs 2 lakh.
- For partial disability, such as the loss of one eye, hand, or leg, an amount of Rs 1 lakh will be provided.
Highlighting the rationale behind the move, the Chief Minister said the decision was made keeping in view the risks and hardships faced by Panchayat-level representatives in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
“These grassroots representatives are directly connected with the people, assisting them in resolving various issues and playing a vital role in rural development,” a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said.
The initiative is expected to bolster morale and offer a safety net to thousands of local self-government functionaries who act as the first line of governance in rural Odisha.
