A 33-year-old farmer allegedly died by suicide after losing his standing vegetable crops in floods that devastated parts of Odisha's Ganjam district in the last week of October, officials said on Friday.
The deceased, identified as Bulu Mallick, was a resident of Sadabrata Nuagaon village. The incident reportedly took place on Thursday, when he allegedly consumed pesticide following the destruction of his crops in the floods.
After consuming the pesticide, Mallick was initially rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. He was later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where doctors declared him dead.
According to officials, Mallick had undertaken vegetable cultivation, but his entire standing crop was washed away by floodwaters triggered by heavy rainfall following Cyclonic Storm Arnab on October 28.
The floods caused significant damage to agricultural fields in the district, leaving several farmers facing crop losses and financial hardship.
The incident has once again brought attention to the difficulties faced by farmers in flood-affected areas, particularly those who depend on seasonal cultivation for their livelihoods.
