#National

New Delhi, 5 October 2024 — The Vice-President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, delivered a powerful keynote address at ‘The Conclave 2024’ organized by Pratidin Media Network in New Delhi today, where he lauded the Northeast as the “heart and soul of Bharat.” He urged the media to champion the region’s tourism and development potential, positioning it as a vibrant part of the country’s cultural and natural heritage.

Shri Dhankhar highlighted the government’s “Act East Policy” as a transformative force for the region, emphasizing the strides made in connectivity and development. “The number of airports has doubled, and waterways have expanded twentyfold,” he said, noting that this progress has sparked nationwide interest and investment in the Northeast. He also drew attention to the recent recognition of Assamese as a classical language, adding that it “showcases the rich cultural heritage of our nation.”

Comparing the natural beauty of the Northeast to global destinations like New Zealand, Switzerland, and Scotland, Shri Dhankhar remarked, “Put together New Zealand, Switzerland, and Scotland, and you will still fall short of the wealth of the Northeast.” He further extolled the region’s rich spiritual and natural heritage, referencing the revered Kamakhya temple and Kaziranga National Park.

Role of Media in Nation-Building

Addressing the media’s crucial role in shaping national narratives, the Vice-President urged journalists to serve as ambassadors for the Northeast, promoting its unique opportunities in tourism and development. “Your stories can serve as powerful tools for development,” he said, adding that responsible reporting is especially important in this age of rapid technological disruption. Shri Dhankhar emphasized that the media must continue as the “watchdog of democracy” and cautioned against misinformation and sensationalism, which he warned could “damage the nation’s fabric.”

Promoting Northeast Beyond Borders

Shri Dhankhar also highlighted how the Act East Policy extends beyond India’s borders, fostering cultural and economic ties with Southeast Asian nations. He spoke of the growing connectivity between the Northeast and countries like Cambodia, where the iconic Angkor Wat temple is being restored with India’s support.

Drawing a parallel with the success of tourism in Kashmir, the Vice-President noted, “Tourism can change the entire landscape of the Northeast, driving exponential employment growth and positioning the region as a global tourist hub.”

A Call for Responsible Journalism

Shri Dhankhar concluded his address by calling on the media to focus on India’s growth trajectory and foster an informed, balanced discourse that strengthens democracy. He reflected on the challenges India faced in the 1990s and lauded the country’s economic progress, noting that foreign exchange reserves have grown to over 700 billion US dollars.

Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Sadin-Pratidin Group Chairman Shri Jayanta Baruah, and other dignitaries were present at the event.
