Murmu urges water conservation at Jal Mahotsav

President Murmu calls for water conservation

President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday stressed the need to make water conservation an integral part of daily life while addressing the Jal Mahotsav 2026 in the national capital.

Speaking at the event, Murmu said water in India is not just a basic necessity but is deeply connected with the country’s culture, traditions, livelihood and community life. She noted that for many years people in villages, particularly women and children, had to travel long distances to fetch drinking water, making access to clean water a matter of dignity, health and time.

Highlighting government initiatives, the President said the Jal Jeevan Mission has significantly improved access to safe drinking water in rural households, bringing relief to communities that previously struggled with water scarcity.

Murmu emphasised that sustainable water management requires participation from both the government and society. She said community ownership, including initiatives such as “Jal Arpan Diwas”, where water supply infrastructure is handed over to gram panchayats, can strengthen local responsibility for water resources.

The President also praised the role of Self-Help Groups in water testing, operation and maintenance activities, noting that their involvement has brought positive changes to communities and empowered women in rural areas.

She further highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts for water security, including groundwater recharge and rainwater harvesting initiatives under programmes such as Catch the Rain and Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari.

Organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Jal Mahotsav 2026 is being held from March 8 to March 22 to promote community participation and strengthen rural drinking water service delivery under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Murmu said water should not be seen merely as a commodity but as a priceless asset for future generations, adding that awareness among the younger generation will play a key role in ensuring the country’s long-term water security.
