Marijne: All Players Must Earn Selection

Indian women’s hockey coach Sjoerd Marijne has emphasized that past achievements will not secure a place in the national team, asserting that every player must compete for selection in what could be a make-or-break year for the squad.
Marijne returned as head coach earlier this year following the removal of Harendra Singh, after a series of disappointing results, including India’s failure to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the FIH Pro League, and a World Cup berth through the Asia Cup.
Under Marijne’s previous guidance, the team achieved a historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. However, recent setbacks have highlighted the need for renewed focus and performance-driven selection.
The coach’s statement underlines his intent to foster a competitive environment, ensuring that players, regardless of their reputation or past performances, must earn their spot through consistent performance and commitment.
Marijne’s return comes at a critical juncture as the team seeks to rebuild, regain confidence, and prepare for upcoming international tournaments to restore India’s standing in women’s hockey.
