Lovlina Borgohain’s Quarterfinal Loss Ends India’s Boxing Campaign at Paris Olympics

India’s boxing aspirations at the Paris 2024 Olympics concluded without a medal as Lovlina Borgohain, the bronze medalist from Tokyo, was defeated in the quarterfinals of the women’s 75kg category on Sunday. Borgohain lost a hard-fought bout to China’s Li Qian, with the judges scoring the match 1-4 against her.

The contest was marked by frequent stoppages for clinching and holding, reflecting the intense and messy nature of the bout. Li Qian, who secured a silver medal at the Tokyo Games and is 34 years old, proved to be a formidable opponent for the reigning world champion Borgohain.

The loss marked the end of India’s boxing campaign in Paris, following Nishant Dev’s close defeat in the men’s 71kg quarterfinals the previous night. Dev’s match was also a tight contest, highlighting the competitive nature of this year’s boxing events.

Despite the setbacks, both Borgohain and Dev showcased their skills and determination, contributing to a strong showing for Indian boxing on the Olympic stage.
