Justice Krishnan Chandran Appointed as Supreme Court Judge

New Delhi, Jan 15 (UNI): The Union government has officially announced the appointment of Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran, the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, as a judge of the Supreme Court of India.

Justice Chandran is scheduled to take the oath of office on Thursday in a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna. The swearing-in will be live-streamed on the official platform of the Apex Court.

With this appointment, the Supreme Court will have 33 judges, including the CJI, against its sanctioned strength of 34. The vacancy arises as Justice Hrishikesh Roy is set to retire on January 31, 2025.

The Supreme Court Collegium, comprising CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justices B.R. Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy, and Abhay S. Oka, recommended Justice Chandran’s elevation on January 7, 2025.

Justice Krishnan Chandran’s appointment brings extensive judicial experience to the Apex Court. His leadership at the Patna High Court and his expertise in constitutional and civil law have earned him high regard in the legal fraternity.

This development is expected to bolster the Supreme Court’s ability to address its extensive caseload effectively.
