Jual Oram Quits Electoral Politics Voluntarily

Union Minister Jual Oram Announces Exit from Electoral Politics, Paves Way for Youth Leadership

Bhubaneswar, July 12 : In a significant political development, Union Minister for Tribal Affairs and veteran BJP leader Jual Oram has announced his decision to step away from electoral politics. The move marks the end of an era for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha, as Oram has long been considered the saffron party’s most prominent tribal face in the state, where Scheduled Tribes constitute 22.5% of the population.

The 64-year-old leader from Sundargarh district made his intentions clear, stating, “I will not contest for MP or MLA elections anymore. I will, however, continue to work for the growth of the party. This is my personal decision, but if the party asks me to contest, I will follow its direction.”

Oram, who played a crucial role in strengthening the BJP in Odisha’s tribal heartland, hinted at his plans during the 2024 Lok Sabha campaign, describing it as his “last innings.” True to his word, after winning yet again from the Sundargarh parliamentary constituency, he joined the Narendra Modi 3.0 cabinet as Minister for Tribal Affairs.

Born in the tribal hinterlands of Sundargarh, Oram carved a niche in Indian politics, becoming the country’s first-ever Minister for Tribal Affairs in 1999 under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, after the ministry was created to address the specific concerns of tribal communities.

He has since remained a formidable figure in both Odisha and national politics, winning the Sundargarh Lok Sabha seat six times and representing the Bonai Assembly constituency twice, in 1990 and 1995. His political journey also saw him serve as the Odisha BJP president and leader of the opposition in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

Oram emphasized that his decision stems from a desire to make space for the next generation of leaders. “I have fought Lok Sabha and Assembly elections several times. It is now time to let the youth lead and shape the future. I am trying to avoid direct electoral politics,” he stated.

While stepping away from active electoral contests, Oram did not rule out the possibility of serving the party in other capacities. “I may go to the Rajya Sabha or take up responsibilities like Governor, if the party desires,” he added.

Known for his deep grassroots connections and widely admired across political lines, Oram’s leadership has been instrumental in BJP’s outreach among tribal communities in Odisha. His affable personality, strong oratory, and unwavering commitment to tribal welfare have earned him immense respect and admiration.

His departure from the electoral battlefield is expected to open up opportunities for younger leaders in the BJP, even as he continues to guide the party with his experience and vision.

With over three decades of political service, Jual Oram’s legacy as a trailblazer for tribal empowerment and as a pillar of Odisha BJP remains firmly etched in the political landscape of the state and the nation.
