India’s Domestic Air Traffic Set to Reach 164 Million in FY25

India’s domestic air travel is poised for a notable surge, with projections indicating a 6 to 8 per cent increase in passenger numbers to reach 161 to 164 million in the current fiscal year. This optimistic forecast comes from a report by aviation advisory firm CAPA India, released on Wednesday.
According to the report, international air traffic is also expected to witness robust growth, with projections indicating a rise of 9 to 11 per cent to reach 75 to 78 million passengers by the end of the fiscal year in March 2025.
Despite the anticipated growth in passenger numbers, the domestic aviation sector is likely to face financial challenges. The report predicts that domestic carriers are set to report consolidated losses ranging from USD 0.4 to 0.6 billion for the current financial year. These losses are estimated to amount to USD 1.3 to 1.5 billion, excluding IndiGo, which remains profitable amidst the industry’s turbulence.
The aviation industry has been navigating through a period of volatility and uncertainty, exacerbated by factors such as fluctuating fuel prices, regulatory changes, and the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the gradual resumption of travel has provided a glimmer of hope for the sector, challenges persist in achieving sustained profitability and financial stability.
In response to the challenging operating environment, domestic carriers have been implementing various strategies to optimize costs, enhance operational efficiency, and stimulate demand. However, the road to recovery remains fraught with uncertainties, necessitating a proactive and adaptive approach from industry stakeholders.
The projections provided by CAPA India underscore the resilience of India’s aviation sector and its potential for growth amid adversity. As the industry continues its journey towards recovery, concerted efforts are required to address the underlying challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities for sustainable growth and profitability.
The outlook for India’s aviation sector in FY25 reflects a cautious optimism tempered by the recognition of persistent challenges and uncertainties. With a concerted focus on innovation, collaboration, and resilience, the industry is poised to navigate through turbulent skies and emerge stronger in the post-pandemic era.
