India suffer shock 0-1 loss to Bangladesh

India slump to shock 0–1 defeat against Bangladesh in Asian Cup qualifiers

The Indian football team suffered a major setback on Tuesday, slumping to a 0–1 defeat against Bangladesh in their final Group C match of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers at the National Stadium in Dhaka. The loss marked India’s first defeat to Bangladesh in 22 years, adding to the disappointment of an already unsuccessful qualifying campaign.

Sheikh Morsalin became the hero for Bangladesh, scoring the decisive goal in the 11th minute amid roaring support from a packed home crowd. His sharp finish put India on the back foot early, and despite periods of dominance in possession, the Blue Tigers failed to find an equaliser.

India came agonisingly close in the 31st minute when Lallianzuala Chhangte found an open goal after Bangladesh goalkeeper Mitul Marma was caught out of position. However, Hamza Choudhury produced a brilliant goal-line header to deny Chhangte and keep the hosts ahead.

Both teams were already out of contention for qualification to the 2027 continental tournament, rendering the fixture inconsequential. Yet, the result will sting for India, who were seeking to end their campaign on a positive note and maintain their decades-long unbeaten run against their neighbours.

With this defeat, India’s qualifying journey ends on a disappointing note, raising fresh questions about the team’s form and preparations heading into future international fixtures.
