Chouhan Highlights Rural Schemes, Defends Centre in Rajya Sabha

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday highlighted the impact of flagship rural and welfare schemes in driving inclusive growth, asserting that India is on track to become a “prosperous, self-reliant and developed nation” under the leadership of Narendra Modi.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Chouhan said the government has created a “new model of upliftment” focused on the poor, rural development and women’s empowerment through initiatives like the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ programme.

He described the proposed Viksit Bharat – G RAM G as an upgraded version of MGNREGA, offering 125 days of guaranteed employment, higher wages and legal safeguards. He added that the Centre has made a record allocation of ₹95,692 crore for the scheme, with states across political lines also making budgetary provisions.

Outlining key welfare initiatives, Chouhan cited schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, free ration distribution, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi as major contributors to poverty alleviation and rural development.

Focusing on women’s empowerment, he said self-help group initiatives under the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ programme are enabling crores of women to achieve financial independence through entrepreneurship and skill development. The government, he added, has set a target of creating six crore “Lakhpati Didis”.

Responding to allegations regarding the suspension of MGNREGA funds in West Bengal, Chouhan rejected claims of political bias, stating that the decision was based on findings of large-scale irregularities. He cited issues such as fake job cards, misuse of funds, contractor-driven works and non-compliance with audit directives.

He clarified that funds for other central schemes continue to be released to the state, stressing that accountability in public spending is essential.

Chouhan also highlighted increased allocations to states like Punjab under MGNREGA compared to previous governments, dismissing allegations of discrimination against the Centre.

Emphasising India’s rising global stature, the minister said the country’s interests are increasingly being recognised worldwide. He expressed confidence that the vision of “Viksit Bharat” by 2047 would be achieved under the current leadership.
