Celebrating the Rich Heritage of the Indian Sari: Book Launch and Fashion Extravaganza at Chitkara University

The Department of Fashion Design at Chitkara Design School, Chitkara University, orchestrated a captivating event titled “The Living Heritage of The Indian Sari” to honor World Heritage Day.

At the heart of the celebration stood the release of a groundbreaking book titled “Indian Sari – Sartoria and Semiotics” authored by Prof (Dr) Vaibbhavi Ranavaade, Dean of Fashion Design at Chitkara University. Dr. Madhu Chitkara, Pro Chancellor of Chitkara University, unveiled this significant publication which delves deep into the cultural and symbolic significance of the Indian sari. Published by Routledge India and indexed in SCOPUS, the book stems from Dr. Ranavaade’s doctoral research, offering a profound semiotic exploration of the sari as a symbol of Indian femininity, tradition, and creative fashion expression in modern India.

Dr. Vaibbhavi Ranavaade’s work transcends mere fabric and design; it investigates the intricate meanings woven into the fabric of Indian society by traditional weavers, designers, and individuals who embrace the sari in various aspects of their lives. From traditional weaving techniques to contemporary fashion trends, from Bollywood to pride parades, the book comprehensively analyzes the sari’s role in shaping cultural narratives and individual identities.

As part of the event, fashion students showcased their creativity through a spectacular fashion extravaganza titled “Sari Saga – Heritage of Indian Sari.” Each ensemble depicted a unique fusion of tradition and innovation, paying homage to the diverse cultural legacy encapsulated within the sari. Draped in exquisite saris, the students embodied the elegance and grace that define this timeless garment.

Dr. Madhu Chitkara commended the efforts of the Department of Fashion Design, emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting India’s rich fashion heritage. She remarked, “This unique event showcases the beauty of Indian fashion and sheds light on the heritage and significance of the sari. It is imperative that we continue to honor and uphold this cultural legacy.”

A highlight of the event was a captivating fashion installation themed “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which celebrated the universal appeal of the Indian sari, transcending boundaries of nation, community, and creed. Eight distinct sari installations, each with its own narrative, showcased the sari’s versatility and cultural resonance through a mesmerizing blend of color, texture, and form.

The celebration concluded with spirited performances of traditional Punjabi folk dances, giddha, and bhangra, presented by students from the Office of Student Affairs, Chitkara University, adding a vibrant touch to an evening dedicated to celebrating the enduring legacy of the Indian sari.
