CAS Rejects Vinesh Phogat’s Appeal Against Olympic Disqualification
PARIS: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal against her disqualification from the Olympic Games final was dismissed by the ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced on Wednesday.
Vinesh faced disqualification after she was found to be 100 grams overweight during the weigh-in for the women’s 50kg freestyle final last week. The disqualification came as a major setback for the Indian contingent, as Vinesh was one of the country’s top medal prospects.
In response to the CAS ruling, IOA President PT Usha expressed her dismay. “We are shocked and deeply disappointed by the decision of the Sole Arbitrator at the CAS to dismiss wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s application against the United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC),” Usha said in a statement.
Vinesh’s disqualification and the subsequent rejection of her appeal have sparked discussions within the Indian sports community, with many expressing their support for the wrestler and their frustration over the outcome.
