BCCI Salutes Virat Kohli’s Glorious Test Career, Calls It a Defining Era for Indian Cricket

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has paid rich tribute to Virat Kohli, hailing his exceptional Test career as a golden chapter in Indian cricket that redefined excellence, leadership, and determination. Kohli, who formally announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year, received glowing praise from the governing body for his invaluable contributions to the red-ball format.

BCCI President Roger Binny described Kohli’s journey as “extraordinary,” underlining the impact he had not only as a batsman but as a transformative leader who reshaped India’s approach to Test cricket—particularly overseas.

“Virat Kohli’s name will be remembered alongside the finest ever to have graced Test cricket,” Binny said. “What set him apart was not just his hunger for runs, but his commitment to excellence in the toughest format. His leadership marked a shift in how India competed—with aggression, belief, and a refusal to settle for second best.”

Kohli’s Test debut came in 2011 against the West Indies. Over a 14-year career, he featured in 123 matches, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85. His remarkable tally includes 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries.

As captain, Kohli’s record is unparalleled. With 40 victories in 68 matches, he stands as India’s most successful Test skipper. Under his command, the Indian team reached the No. 1 ranking and held that position for a staggering 42 consecutive months. His tenure saw historic overseas triumphs in Australia, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies, while India remained undefeated in home Test series throughout his leadership.

One of the landmark moments of his captaincy was the 2018–19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, when India scripted history by becoming the first Asian team to win a Test series in Australia. His twin centuries in Adelaide on captaincy debut in 2014 had already set the tone for a bold, aggressive era in Indian cricket.

BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia praised Kohli as not just a stalwart, but a guardian of the format.
