“Perfect Crown” Sparks Historical Accuracy Controversy
South Korean stars IU and Byeon Woo-seok have apologised to fans after their ongoing romance drama Perfect Crown came under criticism for alleged historical inaccuracies and misuse of royal terminology in its latest episode.
The controversy erupted following the broadcast of episode 11, which depicted Grand Prince Ian, played by Byeon Woo-seok, being formally sworn in as king in the fictional constitutional monarchy setting of the drama.
Viewers and Korean history enthusiasts took to social media platforms to point out what they described as incorrect royal court procedures, inappropriate titles, and historically inconsistent ceremonial practices shown during the coronation sequence. Critics argued that several terms used in the episode did not align with traditional Korean royal customs, despite the series being set in an alternate universe inspired by Korea’s monarchy system.
The drama stars IU, 33, as Seong Hee-joo, an heiress born out of wedlock who holds commoner status despite her wealthy background. She enters into a contractual marriage with Grand Prince Ian, the king’s second son, and the two gradually develop genuine feelings while dealing with intense public scrutiny and palace politics.
Following the backlash, both lead actors issued apologies through their respective agencies, expressing regret over the controversy and assuring fans that the concerns raised by viewers would be taken seriously.
According to Korean media reports, the production team of “Perfect Crown” also acknowledged the criticism and said it would review the disputed scenes and terminology more carefully in future episodes.
Despite the controversy, the drama continues to enjoy strong domestic and international popularity, particularly among global K-drama audiences drawn to its blend of romance, royal intrigue and modern political themes.
