India plans 62 vessels to boost shipping sector

India is set to significantly expand its maritime capacity with plans to add 62 vessels in FY 2026–27 at an investment of ₹51,383 crore, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Tuesday, underscoring the government’s push towards Atmanirbhar shipping.

The announcement came during a high-level inter-ministerial review meeting chaired by Sonowal to assess the impact of global developments, including tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, on India’s maritime trade and preparedness.

The minister said the proposed expansion would add 2.85 million gross tonnage (GT) capacity, strengthening India’s ability to handle global supply chain disruptions and enhancing economic resilience.

Highlighting the need for a robust maritime ecosystem, Sonowal stressed the expansion of fleets including container vessels, LPG carriers, crude oil tankers, green tugs and dredging vessels. He also reviewed the progress of a joint venture involving the Shipping Corporation of India and oil public sector undertakings to acquire 59 vessels.

Emphasising coordinated policy action, the minister directed concerned departments to prepare a comprehensive white paper outlining gaps, targets and a time-bound roadmap for the sector, in collaboration with key ministries.

Sonowal noted that strengthening shipping infrastructure, shipbuilding capacity and port systems is critical to positioning India as a globally competitive maritime nation.

He also reiterated that the safety of Indian seafarers remains a top priority, with agencies asked to maintain heightened vigilance in sensitive maritime zones.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance self-reliance and secure India’s role in global trade amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
