Paan Singh Tomar documentary celebrates legacy

‘A Story That Refused To Die’ celebrates ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ legacy

What began as a simple promotional capsule for the acclaimed film Paan Singh Tomar has evolved into a full-fledged documentary titled A Story That Refused To Die, director Ranjeeta Kaur said on Friday.

Describing the project as “a cinematic tutorial,” Kaur emphasized the importance of preserving films that audiences and creators take pride in. The documentary pays tribute not only to the making of the film but also to the artistic legacy of its lead actor Irrfan Khan.

Originally directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, Paan Singh Tomar (2012) chronicled the remarkable life of a national steeplechase champion who represented India at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo. His journey—from a celebrated athlete and army man to a feared dacoit driven by personal injustice—struck a deep chord with audiences and critics alike.

Drawing from more than 60 hours of raw, behind-the-scenes footage, the 47-minute documentary captures candid, unscripted moments from the film’s production. According to Kaur, the project goes beyond a conventional making-of feature, offering a deeper insight into the collaborative spirit and creative process that shaped the original film.

She noted that such archival efforts are essential in preserving cinematic history and inspiring future filmmakers, adding that films like Paan Singh Tomar deserve to be revisited and studied for their storytelling and craftsmanship.
